The true nature of our reality is that we don’t have a fixed, permanent self. On all levels of our being and existence we are inextricably linked to our immediate environment and the entire cosmos.
This doesn’t mean that we don’t have an experience of a self, or that our experience of a self is invalid or less true than something else. Every moment, we are an expression of the fabric of the Universe in action – even when we feel we are separate from it. Our separateness can be one of the most beautiful and connected parts of experience.
Our minds create ideas of a fixed permanent self, in order to keep us safe from the chaos and allow us to function in the world. If we start to peel back the layers of these fixed ideas then we can start to feel into our true nature; how we feel in this moment is how this moment is for us.
When this starts to be revealed to us, we can begin to let go of grasping on to what we think we are in this moment and allow our hearts, minds, bodies and souls to experience what they inherently are more directly.
This occurs through allowing ourselves to feel our connection with the Universe in this moment; by opening ourselves to experiencing it rather that constructing a fixed idea of what it is.
It vs. the idea of it.
You can try and bypass this by getting to some idea of what ‘it’ is that someone else has described to you or that you have convinced yourself is an ultimate reality, or you can just validate exactly what is happening for you in this moment.
Here we are. It’s weird, huh?
Our heart, minds, bodies and souls are all unique and so each of our experiences of both the outer world and our inner worlds is unique. Finding ways that our minds can make sense of our experience, without grasping on too tightly to what is unfolding, helps us see more clearly and ultimately connect better with what is happening.
It is worth saying that seeing more clearly is only as valuable as how much it helps us connect better with the unfolding process of everything in this moment, there is no end place that we can land on.
Experiencing ourselves through the different heart states is one of the purest ways to connect with this moment – hearts don’t grasp onto fixed ideas, they allow things to impact them, they are only ever present in this moment, and when they are open they are inherently sincere.
Creating a self portrait of yourself, based on the different heart states, helps you understand what is happening in your experience better. Experience is a mix of feeling, understanding, knowing and being present; it is also a mix of connecting with our inner worlds and the outer world. When these things are all in balance we can connect more deeply and more sincerely with what is going on.
I’ve included a self portrait of me below. If you would like to use this tool to get in touch with the true nature of your being in this moment, here are the questions I use.
You can write out answers or just think about what it would be for you in this moment, but I have found images hold magic that allow us to open to parts of ourselves that are often oppressed by our over-thinky, over-sciencey society.
Part of the inherent, true nature of our existence is symbolism, mystery and magic and if we don’t include this in our experience of ourselves and the Universe then we end up at a meaningless dead end so I would recommend opening to some creative way of expressing this.
- Friendliness – who are you when you are around close friends?
- Passion – when do you feel most passionate and alive?
- Joy – what is something absurd about your character or personality?
- Inclusion – what else feels important to recognise in this moment?
May you find ways to open to and express your true nature of being.
