There’s lots of ways that change to our consciousness happens. One of them is through altered states of consciousness.
Sliding in and out of altered states of consciousness is actually super easy and is happening to people all the time.
It happens every time you’re hangry or overwhelmed for example.
Mostly people are so absorbed in their state of consciousness that they don’t have the meta level awareness to compare the different states.
But occasionally something in that altered state of consciousness catches us at just the right level.
It is totally surprising to us from a normal state of consciousness perspective and yet still processable and relatable.
Sometimes it happens by being jerked suddenly back into a more grounded normal perspective, sometimes it happens because an event that occurs in the altered state is so memorable that we carry it back with us.
We catch ourselves out and notice how reality isn’t quite what we think it is and this changes the way we perceive reality indefinitely.
What is interesting to consider is that there isn’t really a state of consciousness that is normal. There’s no one way of experiencing or perceiving the world that we inhabit most of the time or that is a shared experience between people – we’re always shifting into different ways of being in and seeing the world, we just aren’t usually aware of this process happening.
